     Identification of luggage is done in other places, like Germany. BUT,
this does not guarantee a bomb will not get on through luggage. Haven't
you ever heard of those fanatics that are willing to die for their cause?

     Airport security probably has plenty of experience identifying a can
of shaving cream, toothpaste,etc., and whether or not they are bogus.
The nintendo thing is relatively new. I could see how they might, under
x-ray mistake that thing (if you've ever seen one) as a timing device. And
if the earphone wires were just coiled around the whole thing, it would
look even more suspicious. The fact is, we don't know all of the facts here.
A can of shaving cream looks like a can of shaving cream, under x-ray, if
you use your imagination. But, for example, what does a can of shaving
cream adjacent to a nintendo game look like?

     (Really sir, there's no call for that kind of language on the net.)
     The only overreaction was by the media. This whole thing shouldn't
have mushroomed the way it did. Airport security has false-alarms all
the time. Granted, not like this one all the time, but nevertheless,
they do happen. On one flight to Switzerland, my wife and I were detained
at the x-ray machine when her purse went through, because they found what
they thought might be bullets. What they really were was yogurt-covered
almonds. For some reason, under x-ray, they looked like bullets. Even
after hand inspection they would not let us touch them. I even offered
to eat one, but they wouldn't let me touch them until some chief of security
appeared and inspected them. I didn't walk away thinking, "God, how stupid
they are," just because I knew the "reality" of the situation. I walked away
thinking, "I'm glad they're that careful." I never assume I know all there
is to know about security; there might be possible scenarios that I am
unaware of, that might warrant such measures.
     Now ask yourself, why was this nintendo thing "news"? The fact is, it
wasn't. If, instead of nintendo, the thing looked like an ordinary
radio like the one from the Lockerbie (sp?) incident, no one would think
this episode was funny, or stupid. This thing only made the news
because the media thought it would sound funny; "airport security blows up
video game." I can still remember how the world news described the incident;
"...after the bombsquad attempted to detonate the bomb, they inspected the
remains. The suspected bomb turned out to be a video game- Nintendo."
And I asked myself, what is relevant about the fact that it was nintendo?
The media still has the power to slant a story, in the most subtle way.
They presented it as funny, and that's the way the average citizen
soaked it up.

Does anyone know how to controll the ICOM R-70 with a computer, e.g. what signals
you should use, and to which pins in the contact on the rear of the radio. I would
be greatful for an explenation of this.

someone recently asked for this mod, here it is from my files.  Haven't tried
it myself, so I can't guarentee how good it really is.

   Here is a way to get the Yaesu FT-727 Dual Band Talkie out of the band
in both UHF and VHF both lower and higher than normal. Although illegal
it will transmit as well and all is done by keyboard entree, no mods.

   When and if you take the battery off and turn off the memory backup
switch off for a couple of seconds, the talkie looses all memory.
Put the battery back on and turn on the talkie, you will notice that the
display turns on all segments for 1 sec then goes blank. At this point
the processor is looking for a 6 digit code. The factory code to make
the program an is from the factory is ( 443300 ) and if you enter those
digits the talkie will return to normal again. However if you enter the
code ( 601111 ) you will notice the talkie will come up in a different
mode you can and must input 5 digits instead of 4 to input a freq.

Example in the normal mode to get freq 147.06 you would enter 7060 then
        hit the dial button.

        In the expanded mode you would enter 47060 to get the 147.06 cause
        your display now takes and controls the last 5 digits of a freq
        instead of the normal 4.

   This leads to this  entering the freq 50450 would give and display
150.450 mhz and 61650 would give you 161.650.
   And yes this works on the 440 band too. The limits it seems to go is
around on 440 band is 430 mhz to about 463.500 or so.

Drawbacks:
   The only drawback is on 440 you are stuck with 10 or 20 kc steping.  thats
ok for 444.1 or 462.050 but 444.255 would be either 444.250 or 444.260 The
display will tell you if you try to enter something using 5 kc, it will
automatically change to a 0 instead when you hit the dial button.

Other than getting used to entering 5 digits instead of 4 thats it.
Oh and don't forget to re enter into the shift memory the fact that you want
5.0 mhz offset for uhf and 0.6 mhz offset for vhf. In the expanded mode it
comes up with both offsets 0 but you only have to enter this once as it will
never forget them because of the lithium backup.

Just remember if you want to put your talkie back to normal just repeat the
process and when it comes up blank press 443300 and it will be factory normal
offsets, steps , and everything already set to go.

[Note:    I have used this mod in order to use the HT as a scanner to
monitor local fire dept frequencies.  No, it won't go high enough
to cover GMRS and besides, the radio has not been type accepted
for operation outside the ham/mars/cap frequencies.

FT727 walkies with the enhanced processor have the proper steps even
when operating out-of-band.  On UHF, they'll do either 25kHz or 12.5kHz
steps.  The upgrade used to be $30 and one week at the factory.  Perhaps
it's still available.  Later models were sold with it in place.

Phil,

Hmmm, the next question some might ask is: "Is the New Testament legal for
an exam QSO?" According to my ARRL book "The FCC Rulebook", it says:
(p.2-5, par. #1): "The message should be typical of those usually
encountered while operating an amateur station on the Novice HF bands. It
must be unknown to the applicant, and not be a well known phrase from a poem,
song or book." Sooo... the rhetorical question: Is the New Testament a
typical text excerpt from the the Novice portion of the HF bands? And further,
is it "... not be a well known phrase from a poem,
song or book"?

I can hear a VE now: "Do you know who Jesus is?".  :-)

What I wonder is how the NJ law affects me if I go there with my
HT which has a receive band wide enough to cover police and fire
frequencies?  From what I have heard, it sounds like the law would
prohibit having it in the car.  Can it be carried in the trunk?
Since most HTs made today have extended receive coverage, what do
NJ hams do?

  I meant to add to my previous posting that the beam heading was
correct for W. Sahara as accurately as I could tell.  Of course,
this doesn't exclude the station being in NYC :-)  He or she was
working mainly stations on the east coast and W5, but a PY as well,
so it wasn't *really* local.

  Why am I so untrusting?

Here's a stupid but true answer:
Cordless phones don't have a Mega company ( one just like Motorola ) lobbying
for them at the Capitol.  That was Motorola that got that law passed, thus
saving themselves millions of dollars in scrambling/unscrambling equipment.
